Federal BSE dollars flowing to farmers

CANADA - To help sustain producers affected by BSE, Andy Mitchell, P.C., M.P., Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food announced an interim payment and a 2004 Special Advance payment for Canadian cattle producers under the Canadian Agricultural Income Stabilization (CAIS) program. In total, more than $200-million is available to producers under the advance. As of October 25, 2004, more than 4,500 producers have already applied (letters were sent out the week of September 27, 2004). In the six provinces where the federal government delivers CAIS, more than 34,000 producers of cattle and eligible ruminants have received letters calculating their Special Advance.
